The rhythms of the landscape and distinctive terrain near Oberon captivated Whiteley - the sinuous Fish River as it meandered its way around granite boulders scattered about rolling hills punctuated by poplars and willows.
He enthused about it in a letter to his mother Beryl in 1979:
The landscape is the most beautiful I have seen in Australia... The Fish River winds it's way through... the most dramatic features are the intermittent strewn granite boulders, some as big as houses, mostly the size of a small car that gives the dramatic feeling of a Zen garden.
